At a glance

  • Note when the noise starts and stops.
  • Describe where it seems to come from without touching the appliance.
  • Switch off and seek urgent advice if there are safety signs.

Describe the pattern

Is the noise a hum, whistle, bang, click, vibration or water sound? Does it happen when heating starts, when a hot tap opens, after the burner stops or all the time? Note whether it is new and whether it is becoming louder or more frequent.

Explain whether the heating and hot water still work normally. Mention visible messages, pressure changes or leaks. A short recording from a safe position can be useful, but do not move guards, cupboards or hot pipework to capture it.

Avoid a remote diagnosis

Similar noises can have different causes in the boiler, controls, pump, pipework or radiators. An online clip cannot confirm which component is responsible. Do not add chemicals, adjust internal settings or remove the casing because a video sounds familiar.

Check ordinary controls and the exact user manual only. If a user-accessible part such as a loose cupboard door is clearly vibrating, describe it, but do not assume this rules out a heating-system issue.

Know when to call

Arrange a repair assessment when a noise is new, persistent, worsening or accompanied by poor heating, loss of hot water, pressure changes, leaks or a fault display. Call promptly if the boiler stops working or the household is vulnerable to loss of heat.

For a gas smell, suspected carbon monoxide, smoke, fire or immediate danger, leave the area as appropriate and use the emergency contacts shown above. Do not wait for an online booking response.
