At a glance

  • Your schedule and temperature settings do different things.
  • Keep the needs of everyone in the home in mind.
  • Ask for compatibility advice before buying smart controls.

Meet the main controls

A programmer sets heating times. A room thermostat controls heating in response to the temperature around it. A thermostatic radiator valve, often called a TRV, adjusts heat from an individual radiator. A programmable thermostat can combine timing and temperature settings in one device.

Find the names and model numbers on the controls you actually have. A photograph can help the office understand your setup. If you have recently moved home, ask for the manuals and a demonstration rather than assuming the previous occupant’s schedule suits you.

Make the routine fit your home

Start by noting when rooms are used, when people get up and whether anyone is home during the day. Check that the clock, day and schedule are correct. Make one understandable change at a time and allow time to judge comfort, rather than changing several settings together.

There is no single schedule for every household. Work patterns, room use and individual needs differ. Keep rooms comfortably warm for their occupants and discuss any difficulty maintaining comfort with an appropriate adviser or engineer. Avoid making changes simply to match a setting seen online.

Understand what a smart upgrade would change

Smart controls may offer remote access or more flexible scheduling, but compatibility and how you use them matter. Ask which functions will work with your boiler, what happens if the internet is unavailable and whether anyone else in the home can operate the heating without your phone.

Before accepting a control upgrade, ask for the proposed model, installation scope and a handover demonstration. Make sure you understand everyday adjustments, holiday settings and how to return to a normal schedule. Do not assume a smart thermostat includes separate room control unless that has been specified.

  • Current schedule
  • Rooms that are uncomfortable
  • Who needs access to the controls
