Gas Safe explained

How to check a Gas Safe engineer before work starts

A logo on a website or van is not the final check. The official register and the engineer’s photo ID card tell you who is registered and what work they are qualified to do.

Start with the official register

Search the Gas Safe Register using the business name, registration number or other available details. To check an individual engineer online, the Register asks for the engineer’s unique seven-digit licence number, shown on the card.

Do this before gas work begins. If the details do not match, pause and contact the business or Gas Safe Register for clarification.

Check the front of the ID card

Look for the engineer’s photograph, name, licence number, employer and the card’s expiry date. The person at the door should match the photograph. The Gas Safe hologram and security features help identify a genuine card.

Turn the card over

The reverse lists the types of gas work the engineer is qualified to carry out. Check the appliance category and whether it applies to mains gas or LPG. Boiler competence does not automatically cover every cooker, fire, commercial system or LPG appliance.

Use the QR code or contact the Register

Current Gas Safe ID cards include a QR code that can be scanned to verify details on the official website. If you remain unsure, use the contact options on the Gas Safe Register site rather than relying on a photograph of a card sent in advance.
